IWC Porsche Design Ocean 2000 ref. 3504 made in 1988

The IWC diver’s watch for Porsche Design Ocean 2000, produced from 1982 to 1998, represents a masterpiece of engineering and design in the world of watchmaking. It was the first wristwatch with an all-titanium case and bracelet that was water resistant to 2,000 meters, initially developed for German Navy combat divers (Kampfschwimmers) in the 1980s.

Titanium, an innovative material at the time, offered about half the weight of steel with twice the strength, plus it was completely non-corrosive and non-magnetic. Although titanium had been used in watchmaking as early as the 1970s, IWC and Porsche Design were pioneers in producing the first wristwatch with a case and bracelet made entirely of titanium, with the Ocean 2000 model representing the pinnacle.

Designed in 1980 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the Ocean 2000 is distinguished by a 42 mm case, large for the time, with a pressure and rotating bezel locking system, ideal for deep diving and military use. Introduced at the Basel Watch Fair in 1983, the model was also adopted by the German navy, with specific military versions.

Over the years, three models of this reference have been produced, some of which have developed very fine tritium aging, making well-preserved examples particularly rare and desirable among collectors.

The watch in question comes with box, counter box, additional strap with its finials, and the tool for removing the links, making the purchase even more complete and valuable.

If you encounter an Ocean 2000 with an elongated bracelet and on the verge of breaking, it is best to avoid it. In contrast, models like this one in excellent condition and with natural tritium aging are highly sought after and represent a piece of high-end watchmaking history.
